OMI VIỆT NAM::Vietnam Mission: The opening mass for the new novitiate batch (2019-2020) English Vietnam Mission: The opening mass for the new novitiate batch (2019-2020) Joseph Thiện, Novice OMI On May 30, 2019, at the Binh Nham novitiate house of Vietnam Mission, the opening mass for the new novitiate batch was held in the morning. This novitiate batch admits 8 novices who come from various places across the Southeast Asian country of Vietnam. At the celebration were the presences of father Roland Jacques – the vice-provincial, father Emmanuel Trần Quang Khương – the Superior of Vietnam Mission, Father Joseph Đinh Kim Chí – Novice Master as well as the brothers from other communities (Candidate house, Pre-novitiate house, Scholasticate house). We also welcomed the participation of our relatives and benefactors who always support and pray for us. On behalf of the OMI Congregation, Father Roland Jacques officially accepted us to enter the novitiate as well as giving us the blessing. Since this very moment, we begin our new life, willingly giving up ourselves in order to encounter and to be in communion with Christ, our Lord. As one of the 8 novices, I was struck by the fatherly counsel from the Superior of Vietnam Mission: “The novitiate year may be difficult and challenging in the view of many people. However, this is, in fact, the happiest year of the consecrated life in the spiritual perspective. And it would be hard to experience it once more time. In this novitiate year, The religious has a chance to enter the close and deep relationship with the Lord.” Additionally, father Emmanuel gave each of us the three words to live out in this coming year. Those words are “praying,” “rediscovering,” and “community.” He encouraged us to pray everywhere and every time, in the time of community prayer, in the daily mass, in the labouring time, and even in studying time so that we can see what God wants us to be. Furthermore, he reminded us that it is a precious time for us to rediscover our own OMI charism, renewing our love for the OMI congregation to which we want to adhere. He said, “if you just want to approach the rich, the high-class people rather than the poor and the most abandoned, this OMI congregation might not be for you.” Finally, he recommended that the novices should focus on the community life this novitiate year, considering this community as their own family. He said firmly, “Never can the life of a religious be apart from the community life.” In the celebration was also the rite of giving the cassock, which is the sign inviting the novices to take off the old person and put on the new person by the Holy Spirit. May all of you keep on praying for us that this year would be really a time of great blessing for us to touch God and receive the grace of God. Translated into English by JB.
